SUPER CHEVY SHOW A SUPER SUCCESS IN MEMPHIS

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Memphis, T.N. (April 16, 2012) Memphis International Raceway is back in action after a successful Super Chevy Show, presented by GM Performance, returned to the track. Over ten thousand race fans came out to Memphis International Raceway to celebrate the heritage and craft of the American automobile and experience the racing action of the show.

For Chevrolet enthusiasts from racers to car show participants – Chevy is a way of life. Excitement and enthusiasm reverberated throughout the fans who had long-awaited the return of the Super Chevy Show at their home track. The overwhelming reaction from the crowd was, “Memphis is back!”

Five hundred classic, custom and new model Chevys from as far away as Michigan were showcased in Memphis International Raceway’s pit area for the car and truck show on Saturday and Sunday. While there were almost six hundreds participants in the show’s swap meet and car corral.

Thousands of fans packed the grandstands on the quarter-mile drag strip to experience the rumble, roar and power of head-to-head drag racing. More than four hundred Chevy racers from as far away as Louisiana and local fan favorites took to the lanes to compete throughout the weekend. The Pro Show fueled the energy of the event featuring Jet Funny Cars, Pro Modifieds and Pro Wheel standers thundering down the drag strip.

Vice President and General Manager Pam Kendrick said, “Chevy fans in the South have waited 3 years for the return of the series to MIR. The response of the fans, car show participants and racers was far greater than anticipated. It will go down as one of the biggest Super Chevy events in history here in Memphis and sets the stage for a blockbuster 2012 schedule here at the track!”

One highlight of the event included two living legends in attendance. Bill Taylor of Memphis has started 3 successful racing parts businesses in the Memphis market. He was at the BTE Racing booth on Friday and Saturday. Taylor founded TCI, Memphis Performance and BTE. The three successful companies all have a global customer base and are headquartered locally. Taylor, 82, fielded a Funny Car in the 1960’s and 70’s along with Larry Coleman. [Photo 5 is Bill Taylor along with MIR’s Director of Sales and Marketing Glynn Williford. Photo by Shaun West]

Another legend in attendance was Hall of Famer Larry Reyes. Reyes and his wife, Ruth Ann, attended on Sunday. Reyes is most famous for winning Funny Car at the 1970 Winternationals. The event, as voted by fan polls, is considered one of the top ten NHRA events of all time. Reyes piloted the famed “Hawaiian” for legendary tuner Roland Leong and the two remain close friends. Reyes was interviewed during Sunday’s opening ceremonies. He said, “It’s great to be back here at the track in Memphis and to see the great turnout for the event. The staff here has done an awesome job and the event has blown everybody away!” [Photo 7 is Larry Reyes along with MIR’s Director of Sales and Marketing Glynn Williford. Photo by Kimberly Hill]

The opening ceremonies were a true highlight on Saturday and Sunday as they featured a live swearing in ceremony of Tennessee Army National Guard recruits. Sergeant First Class Paul Fisk coordinated the event and Major Kevin Brandon presided over Saturday’s ceremony. [Photo 6 is Maj.
