World Series of Drag Racing presented by Sunoco and Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau Wraps up Historic First Day

Saturday, August 27, 2016

Major league motorsports returned to Memphis tonight with the 63rd annual World Series of Drag Racing presented by Sunoco and the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau at Memphis International Raceway with top fuel, nitro funny cars, pro mods, fuel altereds, and pro stock cars all taking the drag strip on a pleasantly cool evening.

“Race fans had a great day today as they were able to walk freely in the pits and see and talk to professional drag racers such as hometown favorite, Clay Millican, Del Worsham, Tim and Dan Wilkerson, Erica Enders, Jason Rupert, Jeg Coughlin, Bruce Litton, Larry Dixon and many, many more. We are looking forward to a great Saturday with more of the same up close and personal interaction with the pros as well as a family friendly kids zone, great food options, and racing legends displays,” said Pam Kendrick, President of Memphis International Raceway.

Memphis race fans enjoyed the smell of nitro and the ground pounding, heart shaking excitement of professional drag racing at the Memphis International Raceway after a hiatus since 2009. High profile matchups saw Tim Wilkerson against his son Daniel, Del Worsham race Tim Campbell, Erica Enders race Jeg Coughlin, and Clay Millican race Bruce Litton. The evening was capped off with the Fortune Hunters Big Bucks Series. Final results in the Fortune Hunters Big Bucks Series will be available after races tomorrow, Saturday, August 27.

Race fans also enjoyed the midway with many different food options; racing legends displays; an autograph session with Don “Big Daddy” Garlits, Shirley Muldowney and Larry Dixon; and a Kids Zone presented by Autobahn indoor speedway with inflatables and junior go carts; and a jet truck exhibition.

The major league motorsports action continues tomorrow with time trials starting at noon. Tickets are $35 for adults, $15 for children 6 years old to 12 years old with free admission for children under five years old. Tickets can be purchased at the gate.

Memphis International Raceway plans to induct their inaugural class of nine racing legends with Mid-South ties in the Memphis International Raceway Hall of Fame during the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.

The World Series of Drag Racing event is the world’s longest continually running drag racing event in America and this year it will celebrate its 63rd year at Memphis International Raceway. The event will feature Vendor Midway, racing legends displays, autograph sessions, special VIP experiences, a family fun Kids Zone presented by Autobahn Indoor Speedway, a festival of foods, nightly fireworks, and much more. The World Series of Drag Racing brings in professional racers from all over the country to compete against each other. Special guests this year include Don “Big Daddy” Garlits, Del Worsham, Shirley Muldowney, Clay Millican, and Tim & Daniel Wilkerson, just to name a few.
