MIR Partners with Local PR Firm To Promote World Series of Drag Racing in Memphis

Memphis International Raceway has announced a partnership with Memphis firm Obsidian Public Relations to promote the upcoming World Series of Drag Racing to be held Aug. 26 and 27 thanks to support by Sunoco and the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Memphis International Raceway, which is owned and operated by IRG Sports + Entertainment, contracted Obsidian because of the firm's decade-long presence in the Memphis market and event promotion experience with a host of tourism clients, entertainment venues and performing arts organizations, including the Memphis CVB, Memphis Zoo, Brooks Museum of Art, Gold Strike Casino/MGM Resorts, Spring Creek Ranch, Opera Memphis and Memphis Symphony Orchestra. In addition to generating buzz about the 62-year-old World Series of Drag Racing event coming to Memphis for the first time, Obsidian is tasked with increasing awareness about the Memphis International Raceway - one of the nation's most versatile racing facilities, boasting a 1/4-mile IHRA championship drag strip, a 1.77-mile championship road course and a 3/4-mile NASCAR test track and driving school.

"It's a big deal that the World Series of Drag Racing is coming to Memphis after being held in Cordova, Illinois, for more than 60 years, and it was important that we partner with a firm who will help us spread the word and educate the local market about the significance of this event," remarked Pam Kendrick, vice president and general manager of Memphis International Raceway. "Within a few days of speaking with Obsidian's owner, Courtney Ellett, her team sent over five pages of interesting and original ideas for promoting the event, and that's the kind of excitement and passion we were looking for."

The transition to the Memphis International Raceway moves the historic event to a centralized location that can withstand the growth potential and bring in even more racers, fans, vendors, live music and event happenings. The two days of nonstop drag racing action includes professional racers from around the country, as well as local sportsman racers, jet trucks to participate in exhibition runs, match racing and competitive eliminator action in front of capacity crowds.
