MIR Changes Schedule to Beat Heat

Tuesday, July 21, 2015
With the recent wave of dangerous heat expected to continue for the foreseeable future, Memphis International Raceway has changed its racing schedule for this weekend.

Saturday’s Summit Bracket Racing Series presented by COMP Cams with 6.0 and 7.0 racing event will be pushed back to later in the day. Gates will now open at 6 p.m. with time trials starting at 7 p.m. Sunday’s daytime bracket race has been cancelled.

“We’re making this move in the interest of racers and our spectators,” said MIR Director of Operations Paul Cartwright. “Temperatures are supposed to be close to 100 degrees this weekend, and that’s without the heat index factored in. It can get brutal when the heat gets that intense, and it goes double when you are in the cockpit of a racecar with a fire suit and helmet on.

“We made the changes to keep everyone out of the sun as much as possible.”

When racing does get under way on Saturday, the championship battles will be full swing.

A three-way battle for the top spot is brewing in B&B Towing Footbrake among John Castellaw III, T.J. Tracey and Caffey Broadus, who are separated by just 30 points. Castellaw is the leader with 514 points, Tracy is second with 496 and Broadus is third with 484.

In Rick’s Powder Coating Super Pro, 37 points separates the top four spots in the class standings. Shane Stout is the leader with 463 points. Michael Hall is in second with 441 points, Leigh Hubbard sits third with 432 and Jeff Bobo is fourth with 426.

RT Turbines DOT Street is a two man battle between Cliff Hubbard and Billy Foster Sr. Hubbard leads with 467 points and Foster is 10 points out of the lead.

Competition in RT Turbines Junior Dragster is also close with Tyler Poindexter in first with 409 points. Justin Poindexter is in second with 396. There is a tie for third between Drew Tracey and Devin Johnson with 343 points each.

The weekend gets started on Thursday night with Test N Tune. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the track live from 7-11 p.m. Admission is $20 to race, $10 to watch and children 12 and under are free.
