Monza Returns to MIR Ready for Shootout

Wednesday, June 3, 2015
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (June 3) – Much like his “Street Outlaws” co-stars, Jerry “Monza” Johnston was caught off guard by the show’s immediate success.

“It was different,” Monza said. “We quickly figured it out when at one of the tracks we pulled into, we were swarmed at the truck before we could ever get the cars out. That’s when we figured out, ‘Wow this has gotten crazy.’”

Monza and “Street Outlaws” co-stars Doc, Dominator and Derek will take to the Memphis International Raceway (MIR) track on Friday and Saturday night. The four racers will compete in Catch the Outlaws, a Chicago Style Shootout that will see the Outlaws race three times each night.

Barnstorming events like this have given Monza the opportunity to get to know a few of the millions of fans the show has.

“You don’t realize how popular it is until you go out and see it,” Monza said. “You can read on Facebook all day long, but until you see it in person, you don’t realize how big it is. It’s mind blowing with the number of fans and racers who want to meet us.”

This will be the second time Monza has visited MIR and the first time he’ll be able to race.

“I’ll be glad to make some passes,” Monza said. “Last time I was hobbling around on crutches with a broken hip. It’s kind of hard crawling in and out of the car with a broken hip. It’s tough trying to move around that roll cage.

“For a while racing wasn’t a whole lot of fun.”

Gates for Catch the Outlaws open at 6 p.m. each night. The Outlaws will race three times a night between 8 p.m. and midnight with free autograph sessions throughout the evening.

For racers who want to take to the track alongside the show’s stars, there will be a $100 bounty awarded each night for the street legal car with the quickest ET. On Saturday night, a racer admission includes a free entry into the Box or No Box Gambler’s Race that pays $1,000 to the winner. Time trials for that race get under way at 7 p.m.

Admission to the event is $20 for racers and spectators with children 12 and under free. A two-day pass for spectators is $30.
