Fun Ford Weekend Complete at Memphis International Raceway

Saturday, October 15, 2011
Fun Ford_Weekend_borderMILLINGTON, TN – October 15, 2011 – As the closing city on the 2011 Fun Ford Weekend tour, Memphis International Raceway (MIR) drew racers from five states to participate in the one-day Blue Oval Festival.  Ford makes and models of all eras were represented on the drag strip and car show on the recently opened MIR. The inaugural Fun Ford Weekend presented by Roush Yates and JE Pistons brought many Ford fans and racers to MIR on Saturday afternoon.
In the show car portion of the event, classic, custom, modern and modified were displayed as nearly 30 awards categories were represented.  One of the most popular Fords of the day was the 1962 Ford Thunderbird owned by Ed Price, who walked away with the Thunderbird and Best of Show car show awards.  Another double winner in the car show was Leo Harber’s 1964 Ford Falcon winner of the Track Choice Award and Outstanding Achievement in the Falcon, Fairlane, Maverick.
“We had a gorgeous day at Memphis International Raceway for Fun Ford Weekend on Saturday,” said Pam Kendrick, Vice President and General Manager, Memphis International Raceway.  “The Fun Ford Weekend brought some of the area’s best racers to MIR for our first major event since opening in August.  The facility was buzzing with activity all day.  It was a great first-time event for our new facility.  Special thanks to Clay Millican for serving as our Grand Marshal and our exhibition drivers for participating in today’s event.”
Millican Starting_Line.lowThere were several highlights of the Fun Ford Weekend celebration at MIR including the six-time IHRA World Champion Clay Millican, who served as the event’s Grand Marshal.  During pre-race ceremonies, Millican addressed the crowd and then activated the Christmas Tree for the first pair of exhibition runs from quarter-mile drivers Tony ‘Sandman’ Williams and John Sullivan.  Then eighth-mile Pro Mod drivers Jerry Prater and Dwayne Watkins were brought to the line for their exhibition runs.  The final headliner in the exhibition show was David Douthit, driver of the powerful Ford Focus Wagon ‘Focus This’ Jet Car.  In his best pass of the weekend, Douthit piloted the Ford Focus Jet Car to the quarter-mile mark in 8.99 seconds at 180.38 miles per hour.

On track activity continues next week at Memphis International Raceway.  Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights feature the weekly Quarter-Mile Test and Tune and on Friday, October 21, MIR hosts the monthly Midnight Madness.  During the weekend of October 28-30, MIR hosts the 1/8-Mile Bracket Brawl.  Full event details and schedules are available at www.racemir.com.
