Event Preview: CARS X-1R Pro Cup Series

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 22, 2014) - This weekend the X-1R Pro Cup Series transitions from having raced at the smallest track on the circuit to the largest as the series heads to the .75-mile Memphis International Raceway (MIR). The Memphis, Tenn., track which use to be staple on the NASCAR Nationwide and Truck Series schedules annually, will be a bit of a question mark for teams as most have never seen the facility much less raced there.

This has many of the series young guns such as Reid Wilson, Gus Dean, and Brady Boswell excited about the potential of breaking through for their first series win at such a premier track. Meanwhile, championship point's leader, Caleb Holman, might have the upper hand with his experience behind the wheel of a NASCAR truck when not racing at the Pro Cup Series level. The series racing at MIR has brought out another veteran the field will have to contend with in the form of two-time series champion Benny Gordon. Gordon, who hasn't raced with the series since 2010, has the second best average finish in series history making him a contender for the trophy just by taking the green flag.

Two Time Pro Cup Series Champion Benny Gordon
Returns at Memphis: Benny Gordon will make his first start in Pro Cup Series competition since 2010 this weekend at Memphis International Raceway
piloting the No. 25 Benny Gordon Racing owned machine. The 2005 and 2008 Hooters Pro Cup Series champion sits third all-time in series wins with 32. The Penn. driver, now living in Mooresville, N.C., has led 5,500 laps in his career taking home $715,550 in prize money.

Gus Dean Changes Schedule to Race at the Birthplace of Rock n Roll:
Blufton, S.C. driver Gus Dean announced during the off season he wasn't going to run for points in the Pro Cup competition in 2014 and was just going to "pick and choose" what events he raced in. One of those events not originally on Dean's schedule was this weekend's race at Memphis. After running well in the first two events of the season and getting the opportunity to race at a much larger facility, the Dean Motorsports team decided to make the long haul to the "birthplace of rock-n-roll" with hopes of getting the nineteen-year-old driver his first career win.

Veteran Bill Plemons Jr. to Make His 112th Career Start at Memphis:

When Locust Grove, Ga. driver Bill Plemons Jr. takes the green flag in Saturday's KOMA Unwind Liquid Relaxation 150 at Memphis International Raceway it will be his 112th career start in the Pro Cup Series. The 66-year-old driver made his series debut in 1997 at USA Int'l Speedway in Lakeland, Fla. Since that first, Plemons Jr. has lead over 22,000 laps in competition, scoring one series victory in 2001 when he out dueled current NASCAR star Brian Vickers at Thompson (CT) Speedway. According to Plemons Jr. he enjoys racing just as much as ever and is looking forward to going to a "new" track he's never raced at before.

"I've been doing this a long time and I still enjoy it as much as ever. This series has been good to me over the years even though it's changed over the last few years. There aren't many race tracks I haven't raced at in the Southeast, so racing at Memphis is something I'm excited about. The track is wide and fast so we should be able to really race hard there from what I've seen. I've got a good crew with me this weekend, so I'm looking forward to a good race Saturday afternoon," explained Bill Plemons Jr driver of the No. 15 IRM/WJP Inv./Hooters Ford Fusion.
