Tony “Sandman” Williams and David Douthit Headline Exhibition during Fun Ford Weekend at Memphis International Raceway on October 15

Thursday, October 13, 2011
David Douthit._Ford_Focus_Jet_CarMILLINGTON, TN – October 13, 2011 – On Saturday, October 15, Memphis International Raceway (MIR) anchors the five-city 2011 Fun Ford Weekend presented by Roush Yates and JE Pistons tour.  In addition to being the grand finale tour city, MIR marks this special weekend as the first major event since the facility opened in August this year.

In true Memphis style, MIR is figuratively painting the drag strip Ford Blue for all the spectators and racers, car show enthusiasts and swap meet participants.  The one-day show features special exhibition runs from David Douthit, driver of the powerful Ford Focus Wagon ‘Focus This’ Jet Car, eighth-mile Pro Mod drivers Jerry Prater and Dwayne Watkins; as well as quarter-mile exhibition runs from local favorite Tony ‘Sandman’ Williams and John Sullivan.

David Douthit debuts his jet-powered 2000 Ford Focus wagon at Memphis International Raceway this weekend.  Family owned and operated, the ‘Focus This’ machine takes 30 gallons of diesel fuel to make a pass down PBIR’s quarter-mile drag strip.  This unique compact car is powered by a General Electric J-85 engine, producing 10,000 horsepower and a top speed of 200 miles per hour.  In 1993, one week after graduating high school, David obtained his jet dragster license and has been piloting jet-powered vehicles for nearly 20 years.

In addition to the exhibition runs, the competition will be fierce as seven drag racing classes compete for titles and trophies in the Quick Ford (1/8-mile, Electronic), Fast Ford (1/8-mile, Non-Electronic), True Street (30 mile cruise followed by three 1/4-mile runs, DOT), Four-Door Frenzy(1/4-mile), Tough Trucks(1/4-mile),Mustang Madness – Heads Up (1/4-mile) and Compact (1/4-mile)

The No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion show car will be on display at Memphis International Raceway on Saturday.  Stop by midway display area at MIR and see the black and green Ford Fusion from 1pm-5pm.

Fun Ford Weekend would not be complete unless there was a swap meet.  Racers and auto enthusiasts searching for that hard-to-find part for their custom car might find what they’re looking for during the Swap Meet at MIR’s Fun Ford Weekend.  In previous years, the swap meet at Memphis was one of the largest in the country.  Swap meet spaces (10x10) are available for $20.  All swap meet entry fees include the participant entry.

Those looking to admire the classic, custom and modern Fords can stroll over to the Car Show. More than 30 awards will be given in a variety of car show classes at MIR this weekend.  The car show entry is $30, or $25 if purchased in advance at the MIR Executive Offices.  MIR offers a discount to car and truck clubs during Fun Ford Weekend.  Clubs of 10 or more that register in advance save $15 on each car show entry; must register as a group and paid in advance.
