Youth Movement Excited About Racing on the “Big Track”

Monday, April 14, 2014

In just a few weeks the X-1R Pro Cup Series will go from racing at the shortest track on the 2014 season schedule, at the Hickory Motor Speedway measuring .363 miles, to the largest measuring, Memphis International Raceway (MIR), measuring a whopping .75 miles in distance. It’s this transition in size to a track that is much bigger in size and speed than the series historically races at that has several drivers intrigued about the upcoming race weekend in Memphis.

While several long time X-1R Pro Cup Series competitors like J.P. Morgan, Caleb Holman, and Bill Plemons Jr. have had experience at “big tracks” like Iowa Speedway, The Milwaukee Mile, and Rockingham Speedway during the series “Hooters” days. The youth movement in the series hasn’t and getting an opportunity to hit the ultra-fast Memphis track has several youngsters excited of whats ahead for them.

Gus Dean, driver of the #56 Dean Custom Air/Mash on It Apparel Chevy, is one of those drivers who is glad to be going to Memphis in a few short weeks.

“Memphis is going to be a totally new experience for me. I’ve never really been on a track over half a mile so getting to get on track like Memphis is something I’m looking forward to. Obviously as a race car driver you enjoy the speed factor, so going to a track where we get to go even faster than we normally do is a bonus for me,” stated Dean, the nineteen year old wheel man from Blufton, SC.

Dean isn’t the only young gun not sure of what to expect when he hits the MIR surface for the first time on April 26; 2013 Air Flow Research Rookie of the Year winner Brady Boswell has had this event circled on his calendar ever since it came out.

“I’m really looking forward to racing at Memphis in a couple of weeks. Last year I was excited to be getting to race at Rockingham, and then the track shut down so that left me pretty bummed not able to get some experience at big track,” explained Boswell. “As being a young guy in the sport making his way up the ladder, getting that big track experience means a lot for your career and your resume down the road when you’re trying to get approved to compete at the NASCAR level.”

The X-1R Pro Cup Series weekend at Memphis International Raceway kicks off Friday April 25th with a series sanctioned test day that is closed to the public. The following day, April 26, practice for KOMA Unwind Liquid Relaxation 150 gets underway at 11:30pm with grandstands opening to the public at 1pm.
