Memphis International Raceway Serves as Test Track for Carl Edwards/RE Technologies USAC Silver Crown Team

Friday, July 29, 2011

Hagar_test3MILLINGTON, TN – July 29, 2011 – In June, Memphis International Raceway (MIR) opened the three-quarter mile oval track to testing.  Last week, USAC driver Derek Hagar and Carl Edwards/RE Technologies took to the oval as the first team to clock times since the track ownership change in 2011.

In preparation of this weekend’s USAC Silver Crown Race at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, IN, Hagar and the Carl Edwards/RE Technologies team used the recently re-opened MIR to test several different tune-ups and adjustments made to the No. 9 RE Technologies USAC Silver Crown Car.  Hagar sits 11th in the 2011 Traxxas Silver Crown Championship Point Standings and is looking for his first win of the season.

“Since we were the first group at Memphis, it took a few laps to put some rubber down on the track, but once that was done everything went well,” said Hagar.  “The track was just like it was in the past; we had a good day at the track.”

Team manager and Millington, TN, resident Chris Santucci was pleased with the test session and the data collected at Memphis International Raceway. Of Santucci’s 30 years of racing experience, he worked with wing sprints and World of Outlaws for 20 years and added USAC expertise to his portfolio in the last decade.  While at Carl Edwards/RE Technologies, Santucci has worked with NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Carl Edwards and NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.

“The Memphis track was better than we expected,” said Santucci.  “We were running the same lap times we did a couple of years ago; even running on old tires.  During our test session, we didn’t put new tires on the race car.  The track was in really good shape.”

Memphis International Raceway, General Manager, Pam Kendrick witnessed the test and spoke with Hagar and Santucci to survey their feedback.

“I was very pleased with the feedback that Derek and Chris provided on the oval track,” said Kendrick.  “We’ve worked very hard over the last few months to bring racing back to Memphis.  The track is a great testing facility for teams to utilize as they prepare for the final stretch leading into the Chase.”

In early 2011, Memphis International Raceway was purchased by Moroso Investment Partners, the ownership group of Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR), in Jupiter, Fla.  Since the facility purchase, track officials have worked to improve the condition of the racing surface and property since it was left dormant after the last NASCAR event in 2009.

Memphis International Raceway features a three-quarter mile banked oval, with 11 degrees of banking in the corners and four degrees on the straights.   Both frontstretch and backstretch are 1,100 feet in length.

Oval track rental prices start at $5,000 per day for one to four race cars and increases to $5,500 per day for five to six race cars.  For more information and scheduling, contact the Memphis International Raceway offices at 901-969-0811 or visit www.racemir.com.
